What Is Fiberglass Insulation Made of?

Fiberglass insulation is an environmentally friendly material made from molten glass, typically with up to 40% to 60% recycled glass content. It’s spun or blown into thin fibers, which are layered together to create batts or blankets or used as loose fibers for blown-in applications.

Fiberglass offers good thermal performance that’s on par with cellulose insulation with an R-value of 2.2 to 4.3 per inch of insulation.

Blown vs. Batt Fiberglass Insulation

Blown-in fiberglass and fiberglass batts are the most common types of fiberglass insulation in New Jersey. Blown-in fiberglass is made from loose fibers blown into place by a specialized machine. It can be used in open spaces like attics to deposit a thick layer of insulation that fills all the voids in the area.

It can also be used to insulate existing walls, ceilings and floors by creating a small opening that’s easy to repair later. The insulation is blown in through the hole, filling the cavity completely. By conforming to objects in the installation area, like outlet boxes or pipes, blown-in fiberglass creates a good air seal that reduces drafts and improves thermal performance.

Fiberglass batts are made from multiple layers of glass fibers that are adhered together to create an easy-to-install batt sized perfectly to fit tightly between studs, rafters, joists and other framing members. This makes fiberglass batts ideal for insulating new homes, where the batts can be quickly installed in the open bays before the finished walls, ceilings or floors are added.

Fiberglass batts are denser than blown-in fiberglass, giving them a slightly higher R-value, but blown-in fiberglass offers a better air seal. Fiberglass batts have an optional kraft facing and a vapor barrier.
